Ingrown hairs and dark skin is a subject I went into pretty grave detail over on my Managing Ingrown Facial Hair post. Suffice to say I researched a lot on how to approach this and unfortunately or fortunately laser hair removal is the most effective way to treat ingrowns permanently but there aren’t a ton of places that specialize in darker skin.
This is something I’ve wanted to do for years now, especially as my ingrown hair situation hasn’t really improved with topical methods. Plus it’s something that I don’t want to be self conscious about the closer I’m getting to my wedding. Luckily, I found The Skin Agency in Toluca Lake which is super conveniently located within walking distance of my office.
Booking an appointment
I booked an appointment via phone and the associate was a bit curt but overall efficient and was able to get me an appointment fairly quickly (the following week).
Before your first appointment, an RN will speak with you via FaceTime to ask medical questions and inform you of protocol of the appointment, understanding any skin issues and products you’re using that could impede the services…
Unfortunately, I am thoughtless and didn’t stop using Curology which means I needed to go back two weeks later after I was certain that I had used it on the affected areas. This is because actives increase the skin sensitivity which could be worsened by using a laser. The technician was very very professional and did not feel comfortable performing the service without being 100% sure I had at least two weeks of non active usage. I so appreciate the attention to detail and care for clients. It really isn’t about money for the associates at The Skin Agency and I truly appreciated it.
The front desk staff were super accommodating, friendly and efficient. I was in and out in 25 minutes and the actual laser took 3 minutes because I had such small areas to treat. It was slightly painful but not awful other than the horrible smell of burning hair. The technician mentioned that the hair would eventually fall out in a few days but it actually didnt until I used my Japanese facial razors to get rid of them. After that, I noticed the hair was completely gone and it stayed that way for three days+, no new growth?! At this point I figured the initial treatment was successful but I have a follow up in two weeks as you’re supposed to go for a few months.
